Vice Detective, Brandon Carr, despite his tattoos and bad-boy cool, lives in the closet with no intention of ever coming out. Then he meets Nevada Gaming Agent, Nick O'Malley, at a Goth convention and his perfectly constructed world starts to crack. Nick's passions for him, a restored hearse and rope bondage might drown Brandon's will. With the odds stacked against them they try to move from simply sex to something more. Sparks fly as the pair probes a world of cheating, murder, drugs and money laundering. The investigation repeatedly derails their relationship, finally forcing Brandon to choose between staying in the closet and saving Nick's life.

This is more of a 3.5 for me. This was definitely not an exciting or action packed book. Except for some of the sex. I'd say its a little bit like a techno-thriller, except there's really no suspense or bad guys after anyone, until the end. There was a good deal of tech information about slot machines and computer chips. I didn't feel that it was overkill, as the explanations were needed to explain Nicky's actions. That part of the story was more of a sub-plot, it seemed to me.The main focus of the book was Nick and Brandon's building relationship. I read the Deputy Joe series before this. Brandon was the antithesis of Joe. Brandon's version of the closet was trying to act like super hetero-man. It made him act like a total jerk with and around Nick. I really never got to like his character at all. His misguided anger towards Nick, and his unreasonable attitude, when he never made his intentions clear to Nick, were terrible.
Nick was hard to understand. He knew he couldn't trust Jake, yet he allowed him to tie him up, just to get financial information. Then when Jake rapes him and leaves him tied, he gets Brandon accusing him of cheating. Brandon had screamed and called him nasty names and they'd only seen each other twice. He'd flirted with and fondled women in front of Nick and never even said he wanted them to be together. Yet Nick is apologizing. He is always having to soothe and reassure Brandon. While he does stand up for himself, verbally, he caves right after.
Other than sex, I didn't get where Brandon gave enough to Nick, for Nick to fall in love. Brandon gets a tiny bit of redemption near the end, when Nick's in trouble. The other thing I didn't understand, is why Nick didn't bring the first information to someone else in his office. He just started investigating alone and hiding things from his superiors. Didn't make sense.
I rated it for the writing quality, and because I still liked the overall story, in spite of issues. It's enough that I'll probably finish this series too.

Cheating Chance edition by James Buchanan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is my first m/m romance novel. I didn't know exactly what to expect. I really need to start paying closer attention to the synopsis because I expected Cheating Chance to be soley focused on the relationship between Nick and Brandon. I wasn't expecting a plot that included expecting crime, death, drugs and the Mexican mafia/gang.
Nick is out of the closet. Brandon is not. But they are attracted to each other and an encounter that started off as strictly sex between strangers turn into a relationship. When the book focused on the dynamics of Nick and Brandon's relationship, it was great. But when it focused on the Nevada Gaming Commission and EDROMs and other stuff I had no interest in, it wasn't. I would skim or skip those pages altogether. The author provided detailed background information regarding Nick's job and what it all entailed. Sometimes a little too detailed. So detailed that I would catch myself being impatient and wanting to put the book down. But I didn't because I was too invested in Nick and Brandon's relationship.
Cheating Chance was good when it focused on the relationship. All the extra stuff I could do without. Thank goodness for the hot man love that kept the book interesting. I had downloaded Inland Empire without having read Cheating Chance. Nick and Brandon's story continues in Inland Empire. I hope there's more focus on the relationship and Brandon dealing with being an in the closet homosexual who's dating a guy who's completely out of the closet.
Cheating Chance is about Nick, a young goth computer geek. He works for the Nevada State Gaming Commission checking the computer code in slot machines to make sure they're all legal. He's recently broken up with his boyfriend, Jake, who really did a job on Nick's psyche.
As the story opens, Nick is feeling sort of sorry for his situation when he meets Brandon at a Goth convention. There is instant attraction and they go back to Brandon's room. They intend to just have a fling, but their chemistry is strong and they exchange numbers and e-mail.
Brandon is a cop who lives in California, and is definitely NOT out. When Nick and Brandon get together for a fun weekend, Nick's feelings are hurt when Brandon starts flirting with women. Brandon explains it's habit and promises to work on it because he wants the relationship to work. Of course, they stumble a few times and have some issues to work out, and Brandon has a few surprises for Nick.
The relationship storyline is nicely tied in to a mystery involving casino slot machines and a murder. There were a few scenes where I had to go back and read the technical stuff twice, but I pretty much understood what was going on and why Nick got involved; I got the "who" but was curious until almost the very end about the "why" of the mystery.
I loved the scenes between Nick and Brandon - the sex was hot and the emotional scenes drew me in. I was rooting for these two through the whole book. The scene where they talked about having sex with women had me in stitches - Nick is so freakin' cute! I got why it was difficult for Brandon to show his feelings for Nick outside the bedroom, and it made the ending that much more emotional. I'm definitely going to grab the next book about these two, Inland Empire.
I give Cheating Chance 4 1/2 out of 5 stars!
